:- 2.0 out of 5 stars from porscha -- Not good : The first book in the series is amazing and unexpected. It's a compact, simple story. This story feels unnecessary. I do not like any of the introduced characters. Dee comes off as stupid and annoying and I truly loved her simple, kindness in the first book. It's a shame in this book I stopped liking her. Aleda Is still herself and I liked that. Kara and her da just drug the book down. The "bad guy" was not bad and truly I don't understand why they didn't try to help her, but okay. There is no explanation for why the person was doing what they were doing. It felt like the "evil plan" was just there so the story would have more conflict. It all felt a little forced. Lazarus -- Witch in training : Voyager has reissued Jo Spurrier’s fun tale of the The Blackbone Witches, A Curse of Ash and Embers which I hadn’t read and enjoyed enough to buy Daughter of Lies and Ruin the second book in the series. This tale of Elodie, a young girl who thought she was hired as a maid and ends up a witch’s apprentice is fun and absorbing. Showing that they can over come obstacles if they believe in themselves and support one another. Dee who is naive and compassionate balances Aledia who is cold-hearted and been treated cruely for all her life. It was a well written book and kept me hooked. Even though it's the second in a series it worked very well as a standalone and I wasn't left guessing or confused about the world or the characters. And on the strength of this amazing book I'm now reading the first book in the series and have put all Ms Spurrier's books firmly in my To Read pile. Throughout the first book, the characters were getting to know and understand each other, as well as the new situations they were thrust into. Now, they are more comfortable with each other and seem to understand each other well. Aleida and Dee have embraced the roles of mentor and mentee, and their ease with each other shows that they are close companions with trust and a strong connection.
