  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Kyle Conner -- Exploitative. Fetishizing. Straight Male Posturing. : This book is: The Witcher meets Interview with the Vampire meets Game of Thrones meets the movie Underworld ( Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2021 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from The Guardian -- Tries to be all things to all people ... and misses the mark every time : This tale had a fantastic beginning. Then it suddenly jumps to fifteen years later and I can still feel the whiplash. Boy meets girl, boy meets boy, girl meets girl ... ancient vampire meets fledgling vampire and so on and so forth. Then from out of the blue we have a sword that talks (with a speech impediment!) - what the ... ????? I kept looking back to see if I had missed something. Sadly, there is little cohesive framework here. Granted, the protagonist is telling his story but there should have been some natural progression to carry the reader forward. It gives me the impression that whole sections of this book were edited out (maybe because it comes in at 752 pages as it is and the publisher would have to up the already hefty price) or, and I fear this the most, it's going to be dragged out over 25 more books which will jump back and forth, in and out, up and down. We don't know who, what, where and when this character has been, is currently, and plans to be at some point. The book tries too hard to be all things to all people (PC at its worst) and misses the mark every time. I really wanted this to be the next generation of vampire fiction, but it's just exploitation fluff for the masses with lots of four letter words (and variations of it), sex scenes for no reason, same sex titillation - again for no reason other than pandering to appeal to a wider reader base for sales. I gave up altogether a quarter of the way in ... ( Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Josvany Barnica -- Must Read : Firstly, i want to make this known. This is a book that is NOT meant for a speed read. It is a book which you need to read slower then usual and soak up each and every single detail. This book in a very literal sense paints a portrait both in illustration and with world/character building. You get to step into a way of living among the "Dark Ages" It is not at all modern day so please keep in mind that there may be events and/or action of which could be questionable. I ADORE this story and truly can not wait for book 2. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2021 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from RavenousReader -- Not up to snuff : I usually like this author. He can world build beautifully. However, this book lacks most of the characteristics of his previous work. It is like a long, convoluted character sketch. We have an mostly unlikable "hero" telling a rambling tale of his life to another character. No basic major plot, drive or even world building. We know this world is terrible because every other page a wide variety of graphic abuse plays out. It also jumps focus between times of the person's life without connecting them or explaining much. The talking sword is a little over the top. It is game of thrones meets Ann Rice. I would pick it up, put it down, and then try some more. But, it lacked the energy or pull to keep me reading. I just don't care about the characters enough to keep reading. I'm 50% through it and wondering why I bought it. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Claire Jones -- An epic and magnificent fantasy book : Holy S**tballs! This book was one hell of a ride! Vampires are back, extremely evil which is how I like them! If you are looking for a Twilight kind of read, well, you will be in for a shock. This is a bloody, gruesome, atmospheric, action packed tale that is all kinds of awesome. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kayleigh -- Empire of the Vampire : It’s no surprise that Empire of the Vampire is a five star read for me. It deserves nothing less. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 13, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from xanderkir -- Readable Main Story : The main storyline is one of adventure and action with some twists and turns thrown in. Some of the twists are very much influenced by the compulsory inclusion of ' woke' propaganda. I was thinking that the author might have penned this book under the name Gay Kristoff. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bethany -- Amazing! : I've never been so invested in a book and it's characters, I didn't want to put this down and I kept thinking about it while working or trying to sleep. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 10, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Incredible! : I’ve been waiting so long for a vampire story I could sink my teeth into! This is it! It’s my first Kristoff book. As soon as I read the synopsis, I knew this would be good. What I didn’t expect was for it to blow me away. Gabriel’s story is heroic fantasy (with a very healthy slathering of bloody vampire gothic-ness) done right! I cannot wait for the sequel! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 17, 2021 )

IT WAS THE twenty-seventh year of daysdeath in the realm of the Forever King, and his murderer was waiting to die. The killer stood watch at a thin window, impatient for his end to arrive. •The best vampire story I've ever seen… I'm not one to shy away from crass language—I, personally, can have an admittedly foul mouth—but here in Empire of the Vampire the vulgarity is severe overkill. I can understand the necessity for worldbuilding and characterization, but it's SO frequent to the point of absurdity.
